Purpose of Rep points

Whats the purpose of them? Do they actually do anything or is it like the tags, people just use them to talk shit when they are to scared to actually say something to someone? I never noticed the points but noticed mine went from green to red so I looked and it was -9xx something. I thought it was green earlier today but could be wrong.
