Hunting

So I've decided to get into hunting. I've been hunting before, but that was hog hunting with 2 dogs and a knife. I bought myself a Remington 11-87 12 Gauge Sportsman Super Magnum on Saturday. It's the perfect shotgun for me and is very versitile. Right now it's set-up for water fowl and upland bird, but a barrel swap would make it ready for deer and hogs. I've been practicing shooting trap at the local skeet range and it's pretty easy.

My main reason for posting this is to ask if any of you guys know of any good hunting spots. I've been searching online and have found a few but they're moderately expensive. A few of my co-workers and I would like to shoot some ducks but all we have been able to find is public hunting spots. And we've been told that duck hunting down here sucks. Do any of you guys own land that my buddies and I could pay you to hunt? Or maybe know someone who knows someone?

I'm currently in the process of getting all my permits for water fowl. Apparently, I missed the cutoff by one year and I have to spend $25 to take two tests online and then take some proctored exam before I can purchase my State Hunting License. Then I have to buy a State Water Fowl License and then a Federal Duck Stamp. But hey, at least the state license will be good for other game.

I went duck hunting one time when I was about 18. We woke up at the but crack of dawn in the middle of winter and didnt see shit. I dont know of many people that duck hunt in fields (dove hunting thats a different story). Most people that I have known to go duck hunting usually loaded up there decoys in a john boat, dawned the hip waders and went out in the water to hunt ducks.

Duck hunting around here does suck unless you have found some of the few good places. you can join a expensive club and shoot some ducks, but they are caged ducks and the "hunting" aspect of it sucks.
there are some good duck hunting spots on the rivers and a few on the lake. i have a few spots that usually produce on public water and a private plantation i have permission to hunt.
since the duck hunting is not great, you are going to find that not too many people are going to give up their hot spots. the places you read about on the internet will be covered up with people.
If you are going to start duck hunting this year, and have never really hunted before, i suggest you start learning proper spreads on decoys, practicing putting them out, learn how to string them up for current vs non current, learn how to use a duck call (this takes years to actually learn), and LEARN HOW TO IDENTIFY DUCKS.
To not be a hunter, you picked the most expensive game to hunt with the most shit to have to learn.

x2 Just shells for ducks are too damn expensive to have fun with my bank account. Dont worry about identifyin em...game wardens need someone to lock up and they could find a good home for that 11-87

I know we need to be on or near the water. We have decoys, a boat and all the other gear. I just asked about land because sometimes people have ponds on their land where ducks like to stop. I've been clued in on a few spots up North but it's all public. I would really hate to have to fight for a specific spot. But that may be our only option. My buddy apparently knows someone who has some land with a pond on it. We'll see if that pans out.

Just go with deven he kills his limit everytime he goes, they hunt out of a jon boat, a 20 foot champion center console with very little decoys, and soon to be my new key west center console will join in the fun (they NEVER use ANY camo or anything), but i think they went about 5-7 times last year and him and his brother killed a bunch everytime they came back. Not to steal your thunder or highjack your thread but i also just went deer hunting for the first time yesterday and killed a 175-180 lb 12 point for my first deer in st. george. The rack was a non-typical rack and was ugly as crap so im not getting it mounted, but when the jalepeno and cheddar snack sticks that i am getting made are in my stomach who the heck cares???? Pretty good size deer for around here anyways. I didnt think i would like it at all, but its a real rush when you finally kill one! Best of luck and it really is a blast!

Or go buy a 1/4 inch piece of plywood and dump about a bag of corn on it and let it sink about 2 inches under the water and let the ducks follow the yellow brick road We have never done that method, but im sure it would be fun and also expensive if caught! Im really just kidding about this...

That's awesome man! I'm also going to get into deer hunting along with ducks. We're allowed to hunt deer on base a specific times throughout the year. They let us shoot them to keep the population down. The only thing we're allowed to use is shotguns with buckshot. I'm going to qualify Thuresday. They make us shoot 10 slugs at a target and as long as we can put 3 in the center, we can hunt.

Yeah, they just want to make sure we're not just launching lead all over the base.

It took me two shots to get my slugs into the black. Not too bad for a smooth bore shotgun barrel from 50 yards.

We went Saturday and didn't see anything. I think we chose a shitty spot. I'm still going on the first and I should have a better chance since they allow baiting on base.
