JMHO I'd stay away from the 99's there missing quite a few exterior and interior pieces that the 00-04 had.
I would run away from any 01's that dont have a built tranny, those J code diesel's were known to spontaniously combust. From 99-02 your sure to have 4 thread heads, not a big problem if you know what your doing when you change the plugs, but if your a moron I wish you the best of luck on your plug ejection seat. The 03's were a crap shoot, some of them got 8 thread heads some of them got the 4 thread heads and some got one of each lol, the 04's were all 8 thread. 01 was the first year that got the clear heads and tails and the LED 3rd brake lite that replaced the 99-00 that was prone to leaking if you let it rot in the sun for 2-3 years, they also got a new seal around the back glass 02 was the start the driver side keypad entry, and the last year for good rear leafs, the 03-04 leafs were rated for eleventy bilion pounds of towing and jack them up like a 4x4 and are absolutely terrible for drag racing. 99-00 had 3.55 final drive 01-04 had 3.73 (not much difference between the two on a truck that comes with 450 ftlbs of tq stock) 99-00 had 80 mm maf's a diferent lower intake and intercooler (that if it didn't get the recall would leak) and were pig rich in the tune from the factory. 01-04 got a 90mm maf and a much leaner tune with an updated lower intake. (and probably why more of them blew up) There's a bunch more but I'm tired of typing.

Best bang for your buck is an 00-02 because of the price issues, the better springs and the simple fact that all the things its lacking are the first things you replace when you mod. I wouldn't worry about the 80mm maf on the 00 because you replace the maf when you mod anyway and the 3.55's IMHO are better especially from a roll, thats why I have not changed mine we make power in the lower rpm's and the 3.55's give you about 5 mph more. Some like the honeycomb grille, some like the slatted grille the 00 had the honeycomb. The biggest drawback to the 01 is the tranny. And those blocky rims. The only difference from an 02-03 are the springs wich are better in the 02 and the rims wich look better in the 03 to me. The 03 heads are a crap shoot, maybe you get lucky maybe you dont. The 04 is the best with the only drawback being the springs, but then the price comes in. Some say the 01-04 front facia is better, I have the newer facia but I wish I had the old one, the newer fogs are getting hard to find and the old facia used the same fogs as the foxbody GT's and are a dime a dozen.

All of them have shitty rods, well shitty for what they could be. I made good power with mine and so did Chris before I built mine and we built Chris's.
I blew mine up, but I ran it hard from 2007- 2009 when I finally blew it getting greedy I should have left it the way it was, I knew I was on the edge I ran it almost every weekend at the track for a solid 2 years. it would run 7.60-7.70 at around 91-92 mph in the 1/8th and 12.1's in the 1/4 at around 110-111 mph and I should ave left it alone because that's the edge. Instead I pushed it harder into the 7.40 7.50 range on the stock blower with around 19 psi with bigger pulleys and a bunch of timing advance. It didn't last long like that lol I built it back at the end of 09 and it ran good then, I could DD it and it would run 7.30's all day long at around 94 but That wasn't enough so I started spraying it with a 75 shot, I could drive it to the track with the a/c on change the tires and spray it to 7.11's at around 98 mph. But I liked racing on the street too and eventually lifted a head spraying it up in redline at around 135 mph in 3rd, since then I've backed off it a bit to keep it alive on the lil stock displacement 1.8l blower it seem's to be comfortable running mid 11's in the 1/4 on pump gas, I still have the spray on it, but hardly ever shoot it, I'm certain it would dip into the 10's if I let it eat, but I'm pretty contempt with it the way it is, I still daily drive it and I have 4 other cars to choose from in my driveway to drive..... I absolutely will not turn it into a NO A/C race-truck that can't tow, I still even use it to tow my boat.

There's guys out there that have been mid 11's on the stock blower and the stock motor that were alot faster than me, but they get there with weight reduction. Back when I was running numbers I could literally tow my boat to the track unhook the boat, change the tires and run my numbers. and they damn sure wouldn't DD theirs like I do mine.
Hell, I towed my boat all the way to Florida this past weekend and back with mine I even sprayed it with the boat on the back trying to outrun my new TT SHO with the ole lady calling me out.
