Default whining axle...

ok, so the rear end of the car has started whining, really freaking loud at highway speeds. so it's either the axle bearings or the gears are mis-aligned, right? i've never done any differential work before, but i've heard its a pain. anyone ever overhauled a rear end before? how much should i plan on spending to get it done?

Well, some would say $1000 to overhaul the rear. I have never overhauled a rear before. All I did on my old fox was get a turbo coupe rear with 3.55's and LOWMILES and swapped here out.

Paul,
Do you have an 8 or 9" rear end. Does it do it all the time or just when you are on the gas or off. Just some questions to help find the problem. I know a couple of Fords guys that remember how to work on what you have.

It's an 8 inch. It's pretty much all the time, starts to get noticeable around 35-40 mph, and around 60-70 you can hear it over the exhaust and the radio, it's pretty bad.

Sounds like one of your bearings has taken a shit on you. There's only one way to find out... Tear it all apart and inspect everything until you find the culprit. You might as well do some rebuilding and upgrading while you're at it.

+1

Definately sounds like a bearing problem. Either that, or the carrier has come loose. Any way you look at it, she's gonna have to come apart. Sounds like the perfect time for a locker and new gears.
