Default Tire Question

Just needed a few opinions on tire sizes. Im planning on running a 275/50/15 MT Radial tire, which is a 26" tire. I was wondering if going to a 275/60/15, which is a 28" tire, would get let me stay in 3rd gear on spray in the 1/8th mile. I go to 4th for only about 50-75 feet (guessing) before the line. On motor its on the verge of needing to go to 4th. The 28 would also probably allow me to run out the 1/4 in 4th, but I dont plan on doing to 1/4 too often anyway. I know thats probably not enough information to be able to make that call, but any help is appreciated.

from that limited info, i would guess that it would work. Make sure that 28" tire will fit under there before you buy them.

Good idea. I am lowered 2.5 inches right now and plan on going to a stock height "drag" type spring. It should work but would be smart to try it. Anyone have a 28" tire on a 5 lug mustang rim??

one more thing- if you get that tire to hook like it is capable of- it is probably going to bog your car.

Im sure there are some on here that can answer your question but I would recommend asking this question on a mustang specific forum for best results. Just my .02

Werd. I guess I should borrow some 28s first. It may be hard to find someone who has that same problem. I dunno

The 28" tire will probally hurt your gear ratio. If you can get it to hook with the 26",you will be quicker. When I had the Mach, it ran quicker with the 315-35-17 drag radials, which equals to a 26", than it did with the 28" drag radials. It didn't have much power so any change in gear ratio hurt the ET. The 275-50-15s work good, I ran a 6.22 with them on my black car and me and Jeff run them on our cars now.

I had Jeffs old ones and they actually hooked up good once I got em hot. Its just the fact that I go to 4th just gets on my nerves because its only for like a half second or so. Id rather be able to just carry out 3rd. Which with the cams I may be able to do that anyway. I dunno. Id still like to try some 28s if anyone has some.

Do you still have the 4.10's in it now?
What power range do you plan on running?

RIght now I have the 275/50/16's on my black truck and Jeff is right. They bog like a mofo. For granted I have 3.42's in the back and about to go up to 4.10/4.30 range unless I find some 4.56 gear . Also I have shot the gas through it to see if that changes, but there are other variables needing to change first.

I think a 28" tall tire will bog unless you have more power or gear. BUT, just ride 3rd out the last couple of feet at the track. What rpms are you turning in the traps?

The 28" tires should help you in not having to shift into 4th in the 1/8 mile. They will hurt yuor gear ratio some. They will however let you launch the car harder & not spin due to the increased sidewall height. I would definitely try someone elses tires 1st if you can before buying.

Ever thought about running a Hoosier 27in tire? I was contemplating the same thing so I bought Jay's 27x11.5 QTP's. Too bad the bolt pattern is different on our prostars because I would let you give them a shot.

It also depends on the 1st gear ratio in your transmission. I don't know if you are still running a 5spd but if you are and you have the 2.95 first gear, you would have to shoot it for it not to bog with the 28s.

its a 4.10 gear, but its a t45, not t5 so I dont know the ratio. Im sure it wont be bogging when its done but I do wanna try someones. It went a 1.64ish 60' with the bald 26s and that wasnt even launching it as hard as I need to be. That was like a 4000-4500 drop.
Lxtasy, im running about 6100 on motor in 3rd, and thats pushing it. On spray, theres no way to carry 3rd out without bumping the limiter. Its set at 6150 and I usually shift around 6k, unless on motor I carry 3rd out that little bit more just to not have to shift.

Thats weird. I thought the 3650's 3rd gear wouldve been more steep than a t45. Mach Killers car is mean in 3rd, but mine is mean in 2nd and 4rh. Maybe my cars just a turd compared to his

Be careful if you plan on running 28" tires. Fenders need to be rolled and the BS has to be perfect. Alot of massaging of the fender wells around the shock and springs. Rubbing will happen. 6.5 BS on the SN95's and 4.5 is good for the fox bodies. Not sure about your year.
