Coolest aircraft ever. We should still be using it.

It's antiquated and too expensive to use when we have awesurm satellites and UAVs and shit.
That said, one of my top favorite aircraft of all time. I loved that thing.

how would it do a vertical takeoff? they pour fuel out of the tanks when sitting on the ground. seems like it would explode

It leaked enough fuel sitting on the spot to do pretty much that! lol

Fun fact: it's panels are loose when cold but tighten up perfectly at the Mach speeds that it sustains in flight, due to heat and expansion. The jp8 or whatever is also circulated through the panels to help cool it (hence the leaking before takeoff.

In 1966 I was onboard the USS Intrepid and on the roof-flight deck was a SR-71 Blackbird which was hoisted on deck by a crane for its trip to Vietnam.
It was guarded by 4 marines with automatic weapons & was roped off so no one got within 50' of the aircraft.
The surface was a flat black finish. It looked like black death.

This was an aircraft ahead of its times. The speed was rumored to be over 3000 mph @ close to 100,000 ft.
Let this history be a true museum piece.

I think its top speed was about Mach 3.6? But then again, it skirts the upper atmosphere which helps reduce drag.

Could have gone a lot faster but they were limited by the quality of the fan blades at the time.

And cooling as well, I believe.
