Anyone have any experience with them? I know they are two speed, and they draw a lot of current on start up. The dimensions given are just right for my radiator, I just don't have a clue on how to wire the bitch up.
All I'm concerned with is having the high speed. I found something that said to use a Bosch 150 amp relay p/n 0 332 002 156, but I can't find that one. I'm assuming I'd still be able to control the fan by splicing into the pcm pinouts, just not sure what to do.

it shouldnt be bad to wire up do you drive the car on the street or just race car?

I drive it when the weather is nice on the street. But here lately you can't tell what it's going to do.
I know what your getting at, and I don't want to use a switch. If I can find a higher amperage relay I'd like to just replace my stock one for that. Hell I don't even know what amp the stock relay is, I know its a 4 pin relay.

yea it will be easy doing your fans. your computer should control the ground side and then on a 4 pin relay you have a terminal 85 and 86- one is power one is ground. 30 is the constant 12 volt source. and 87 is your fan. does that clear it up?

or just run 2 relays in paralle(spelling?) and it should cover it. your ecm will only cover one speed so just have it use the high speed.

id just wire up the high speed to the computer. do you still have air condition?

i think he is worried about the amount of draw that the fan will put on everything. but if he still runs the switched side of the relay through the ecm then it should control when it needs too but i dont think he has ac

here are some things we use when doing the taurus fan on s-series and/or v8 swapped s-series. It will also work for you

I am unsure on doing the pinouts. But I believe just wiring the fan up to a switched source (ignition, t-stat controller, or switch) will do just fine.
We did a 30 amp relay for dads taurus fans behind his lt1 and no problem at all. His comes up when the ignition is on though (adjustable t-stat controllers SUCK ASS

i say my idea with the relay would be the easiest. i dont like the fact that the fan on my s-10 turns on when the key is on but the wiring is a nightmare anyway so that will be redone soooooooon. if you have the PCM controling the 86 terminal. 85 to ignition. 30 to a constant 12 volt source and 87 to the positive on the fan you will be more then good. and maybe throw an inline fuse. you will be safe

Are you using just the high speed? From what I found, the initial draw when the fan starts up is over 100 amps, but it's less than a second. Then it draws close to 30 amps and that is for the high speed.
I don't have A/C and will not have A/C. I have to find out what amp relays I have, but I may just wire up the high speed with the stock wiring. My concern is I don't want any wires melting and possibly burning my car down.
I found a 70 amp relay from dakota digital with the relay harness for 30 bucks. It's a 5 pin relay though, not sure what has to be done there.

We are only using the high speed side of the fan. this runs at a constant 4500cfm. You can always get up with us and check how its wired. ;)

the 5 pin relay is the same it just has the 87a pin that will have power at rest. so it could easily be used

I have 75amp Bosch relays at the office, but I cannot imagine an electric fan drawing so much, but I have the relays if you need them, I will have to look up the price..

Do you have a link of everything that yall used? What kind of temps do yall see? Any problems with the charging system?
Thanks for the help everyone

Hayden fans (imperial) aka advanced auto special are not more than 2500 cfm. the taurus fan which is half the price flows 4500 cfm.
My fan keeps the lt1 at 185 max temp. This fan also has to pull the air through the tranny cooler and it keeps the trans temps around 185-200 max.
I will see if I can sketch you a diagram of how we have them wired.
I also do not have any trouble with the charging system. everything works great. just like it is suppose to. :)

All I can say is to find out what year and model Taurus your fan is coming out of. Some of them switch high and low speed outside the fan and others do it internally. If you get me that information, I can tell you which set up you have got. I can at least figure out which wire to hook up to get the high speed side of the fan.
And, beforer the Hals say anything, I will NOT USE ALLDATA to find my information.

I found a 75 amp 4 pin Tyco relay from here:

Which looks like what I will do and use my pcm to control it. Hopefully I'll be able to find a fan in the yard. Sound like a good plan?

All you have to do is search on www.s10forums.com or www.v8s10.com and the years are mentioned that you want to use. Hell they even have pretty pictures and mspaint drawings to go by. much faster than :poke: alldata. ;)

we have because that is a most used electric fan, even in the fox mustang community. mustang boards are loaded with it also. intrepid fans and now hhr fans are becoming popular. i am going ls1 fans on the wifes truck and maybe hhr on the blazer, either one as well.

I wired one up about 6 years ago in a 57 Vette LS1 that used three 30A relays to activate both speeds under different conditions. The low speed was used for the AC and once the engine temp got high it would override the low fan and turn on the high fan. The engine temp always took priority. The third relay was used as a switching relay. Still working in Texas to this day.
This was back before I had PCM access so we made it work using external sensor switches. I would use the PCM control these days, of course.
On a side note...Hal, we need to get your fan running off the PCM my friend.

I agree. I guess we will add that to our "when we have free time" list...:bigthumb:
We have a few milestones to hit at the track first and then its HCI time. maybe when we are down during that timeframe we can see if its possible. Remember my harness is custom made. I might have to put you in touch with the harness designer in florida.

Alright, I finally have time this weekend to wire it up. I have it installed and it fits, just have to wire it up. I bought the 75 amp diode 4 pin relay from: http://www.keefeperformance.com/kprelay.html
What gets wired to what? There are two larger pins and two small ones. I'm assuming the larger ones need a larger gauge wire. Now I can't find which pin controls the fan in the pcm either, so if someone knows what that is for the 98 that would be helpful.
I suck at electrical shit. I can do it, just need to know what goes where

Rodney,
The Cooling Fan pin #'s are 43 (Red Connector) and 28 (Blue Connector).
Here is a list of all the pinouts for the 98 PCM.

30 is constant power 8awg
87 goes to power the fan 8awg
86 is for fan control 16-18awg
85 is ground 16-18awg
and then use 8awg for ground straight from the fan.
What size inline fuse?
How does that sound?

The PCM will be switching the ground on the relay so the other terminal (85) will need a +12V signal, usually a switched signal.
As far as the fuse, I think 30A will do it, but shouldn't need more than 40A. I would try to use the MAXI blade type fuse.

Where is a good place to get the switched source and what would be wrong with the constant power?

You want constant power, that way if the car is hot the fans will still run once the car is cut off. They are constant power from GM. I have mine setup where if its over a certain temp the fans will run for a a min or two once the car is off.

That's what I figured. But I did find a switched source, there is a bunch of them under the bottom fuse box, the one with the ign relay.
