Comparing a job with a 20yr retirement. Free training. Free housing. Commissary food prices. To an $8/hr job? Interesting.

It sounds like you have put alot of thought into. Make sure you get anything promised to you in writing before you sign.

What is it that you want to do in life? Joining the military to find out may not be the best way. Start with the long term goal of what you want to do. Just say you want to be an Electrical Engineer, ask your parents to stay at their place and finish the 2+2 program a Trident Tech/Citadel then join the military if need be. Staying at home may suck, but in the end, no one will give a fuck where you stayed when you were getting educated.
I moved back home at the age of 25 or so to go back to school after being a welder/shipfitter for 8 years. Worked as many hours as I could while going to school. It didnt matter what kind of work as long as it was putting money in my pocket. Started working for a company doing what I was going to school for. After 6 years of working for others I started my own company. That has almost been 10 years.

20 years is a lllooonnnggggg ways away for someone who hasnt signed the dotted line yet...
The training may be free but dont expect to just get trainings because you want them. You cant just say "Hey top! I wanna go to the flux compasitor maintainence and repair course!" and expect them to send you.
Commissary.... Um... Walmart and publix are cheaper lol
You do realize that IF (and I do mean IF!) you actually only have a 40 hour work week. (My average back on active as an 11C was 60+ CONUS and I dont even want to think about how many work hours a week OCONUS...) That only comes to like 9 bucks an hour...
Not by any means trying to tell you not to join. Shit I hope you do and wish you the best if so. I honestly love the Army and kinda like the reserves a bit lol Just make sure you really want to do the job you sign up for. Oh and remember... If its a job YOU want then dont expect a bonus. If its a job the Army wants to stick you in then you may get a little something. Dont expect much though. This isnt 2005 when we were handing out all sorts of sweet and chewies to sign the dots.

Not sure how the army works, but in the Air Force you try out for Pararescue/Combat Control during basic. No matter what afsc. At least thats how it was 20yrs ago...(wow, where did the time go)
Just don't sign up for special forces alone, because you may end up with a shit job if you don't make it.

My initial training i would. I know once im in i cant just say i want this this and this. 20yrs is a long time away but what would i get out of a dead end job like i had lol, nothing. I know its not like they advertise it be all you can be blah blah blah blah. I have friends who are in. Most of them love it and some of them hate it. My plan is go in as 88H then switch to 15D since im DQ'd from it right now. Do 6yrs then prolly come out and stay reserves. To do something for a sign on bonus would be the dumbest thing someone could do lol
edit: ^ Army you can really pick your job. Like last time i was in they pulled up what jobs were available. The one i wanted wasnt so i walked out lol. I do 9wks of basic everyone does then go through my AIT. For what i want AIT is only gonna be 8wks. If i picked something like Radiology my training would be like a total of 46wks. Just depends what i choose
