Default Detailed my Black 03 ALL DAY!!!!!

Well my fiance got me all kinds of detailing goodies for christmas so yesterday I finally got started. The car was already in pretty good condition as it's not daily driven and kept under a car cover at all times. But the car does have 52K miles on it and I haven't done a good detail on it in over 18 months so it started to show how bad black can look. It had minor to medium swirls, some dulling on the front bumper, and bits of rubber and misc junk in the paint. So first I clayed the whole car including the wheels and windows. Then SSR2.5 on the orange pad, SSR1 on white pad, Red Moose on a polishing pad, Meguiars NXT on a polishing pad, and wipedown with Meguairs Ultimate QD. Polished and waxed the headlights. Mothers polish applied with a powerball on the wheels, blower pulley, and exhaust. For the exhaust I cleaned it up first with 1000 grit sandpaper then went to town with the powerball and mothers polish. It's looks awesome from behind the car now! My wheels have never looked better, they look like the came right off the showroom. All the black plastic was treated with back to black. The first few pics are in direct sunlight to show the swirls and paint looking dull before I got started.

Right after applying the Red Moose, no wax yet!!

And the finished product.....

My personal favorite....check out the exhaust!!!

At night with the flash to show how wet the car looks, and the lack of swirls....

In direct sunlight practically swirl free!!!!! Ignore the dust, I didn't even notice it until I saw the pics.

Thanks man!! And BTW I haven't forgot about you, I literally haven't been back in GC since that day. Maybe Monday I'll have a chance to get out of work at a decent hour and head that way.

Looks good Kevin. I now have a black vehicle for my daily driver. It needs a major wax and cleaning job done both inside and out. I've never done the clay bar deal. Is it hard?

It's cake Larry. Basically you just spray the "lube" on a 2'x2' area on the car and lightly rub the clay over the paint. You'll hear it rubbing over the garbage in your paint, it almost sounds like sandpaper! After 5-6 passes you should notice the paint is now smooth as you are bringing the clay across it and doesn't "catch" anymore. Then just wipe that spot off and move on to the next one. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to clay the car/truck, but it really makes a big difference in how the vehicle looks and feels! What did you pick up for a DD?

We got my wife another car and I'm going to keep her 2002 Tahoe for myself. It's got a lot more room than my 95' Lightning and tows a lot more, but most important is that she doesen't want me to sell it. It's not as fun to drive as the truck, but is a lot more practical for my work and family.

Find somone to buy my 95' Lightning!

Kevin, do you just wax the car after doing the clay bar?

Well the correct way would be to follow the clay with a series of polishes/sealents/waxes depending on the condition of the paint. If the paint is in excellent condition you could just clay it, then maybe a coat of polish followed by wax. But if the cars has marring, swirls, scratches, etc. its going to take some abrasives and polishes to clean the paint up. Wax really just protects the paint and adds some shine it doesn't fix any defects in the paint.

The paint is in decent shape, but has a few scratches and dings because someone was always looking for the closest parking spot instead of a larger spot . I'm not looking for the car show shine for a daily driver, so a good buffing and coat of wax may have to do.

Looks great.

Larry, if you need someone to remove those door dings I've got some guys that do great work. They mostly work out of the McElveen dealerships but I was AMAZED at some of the dings they took out of the Lexus.
