Haven't posted in a while, been busy working and coaching competitive travel baseball. My two sons and myself pulled the AOD out of the 89 Mustang and put in a built C4 with a stall converter & reverse manual valve body. Don't ask me the stall speed because I don't know. I bought this trans used that has only 6 passes on it. The other guy is getting a powerglide.
What we do know is that I can footbrake it to 3000 and leave. We went to Bowman on Friday night and made 7 passes. 4 on motor & 3 on spray. Car went from 8.90's on motor (aod) to 8.20's (c4). We hit the spray and could not hook at all. Spun the tires badly from the gate and at the 60 ft. No good times on spray since no traction, only ran a 90 shot. We have been a best of 7.27 on a 125 shot with the aod, but also with a dead hook. Drag radials are worn out got about a 100 or so passes on them. Time for new tires, maybe time for slicks, just guessing here. Maybe we can pull off a 7.0 or maybe even a 6.90 on the spray if we can hook-up. I quess we will see. Need to change the fuel pump next so we can up the nitrous a bit.

It looked like it was moving pretty damn good on motor alone friday night.
How did your 60 ft times go from aod to c4?

I was just mentioning your name last week, saying we haven't heard from you in a while. Good to see you back at the track Will.

60's time went from 2.05 (aod) to a 1.71 (c4) on motor. It got worse on spray since we couldn't hook.
Dave, we can hook up any time. I don't care win or loose. Just like havin fun on the strip. I can't lie, I do like to win though. If it's close on motor, then we will have to put the love juice to it.

It was good to be out and see everyone at the track. We will be tied up for the next 2-3 week-ends for baseball, then we are on break. So some fall racing action will be in order.

I'm pretty sure you would win just on motor, unless the temp drops in the 40's, I can't go fast enough to get that low in the 8's. But like you I like to race win or loose, and I'm ok with loosing some times.

Chillerman,
What stall did your old AOD have? There isn't much difference between first gear ratios from an AOD to a C4. Of course, a C4 has some lighter internals, and I rate them about the same weight as T-5 internals. AOD internal weight falls between the C4 and C6 rotating assembly weight. Of course we all know about the typical time gains you get from ditching a C6 in favor of a C4. An AOD can be made to be stronger than a C4, but it will cost some more in the parts arena than building a C4. The cat's ass is the Lentech strip terminator valve body for the AOD. It makes an AOD just as strong as a Turbo 400. Overdrive is a plus if you plan on running some steep gears and driving your "street car" to the track. On the other hand, the reduced cost of a C4 can save you enough cash to buy a lot of fuel vs. the fuel savings of overdrive capability in the AOD. If that AOD you have is a virgin unit (not messed with internally), how much would you want for it? I like to get hold of true Mustang cores from '89-'93 whenever I can because the shift points with the Mustang valve bodies + a Transgo shift kit can be had around 6K rpm. Just leave it in drive and steer! Transgo equiped AODs can handle about 550 rwhp, which is a little more than you should be asking out of a production 5.0 block anyway. Any more hp than that and it is time for the Lentech valve body. Last edited by gearmesh, inc.; 07-13-2009 at 10:16 PM. |

Gerald,
The AOD is a virgin unit as far as I can tell. It's not the original unit though. It had a junkyard date written on the bell in the yellow ink they use when they pull em for you to buy. I bought this car from an individual in Raliegh, NC who, of course is not the original owner. I have no history on this car other than what we are creating. I was planning on having you build the AOD, but the cost with the good guts was starting to shy me away. I got such a good buy on this C4 & converter, I couln't pass on it. It already has a hardened input, TCI servo, and a 6 pinion planetary, reverse manual valve body, and whatever good stuff goes in them. It leaves money left to be able to go towards the 408. I'll let you know about selling the AOD, not sure what it's worth, and it still is a working unit. However if I was going to put it back into something, I would have you freshen it up anyways. PM me, and let me know what it's worth.

That is killed time changes. I think the car liked going from a stock converter to a larger stall. On the gas you may need it tightened up though, I notice in mine when on the gas in high gear its making RPM but not really going anywhere. I still haven't found the happy medium yet. You need enough converter to leave good, but not so much that you blow through it on the gas on the top end of the track, espicially in the 1/4 mile..

I may wait on getting the converter tightened up until I see how it behaves on a dead hook with the spray and also when it gets behind the 408.

I'm going to leave the converter alone for now. No point in spending money on it since the 302 is just temporary anyways. My goal is to crack the 6's with the 302 before the 408 goes in. That converter is more suited to the 408 anyways, no point in spending money twice. We will continue to have fun with the car until we can get enough cash together for the 408.
And yes there is a SupermanMotorsports decal on the rear glass. I put it there because David has always done a good job for me.

Hey, Will! I am just getting around to checking out your videos! I copied some photos to use in the newsletter, too. Catch you later, Smitty.
