driveshaft question

does anyone know what the factory horsepower rating for the 99 to 04 automatic driveshafts. also does anyone know of anywhere local to get a custom driveshaft made?

dss is located in charlotte.. and my buddy is a major distributor for them.. let me knoe if u need soemthing i will have him check it.

I know from my own eyeballs that a Ford Racing aluminum unit for a fox body will spread the aluminum ends apart at about 550 to 600hp. Ugly, ugly.....just ask RM1 about the time he owned that aluminum driveshaft!

As far as what Ford puts in the later models, I personally don't know. My suggestion is if you plan for over 500hp, get a steel driveshaft.

Joint and Clucth off cross county road. They have made me atleast 10 drive shafts and pretty much everyone I know racing in SC has one from them.

If you're talking about for your truck,you don't have to worry they'll handle all you can throw at them...

i called them about one for my 99 Mustang automatic.

the receptionist told me "they have no idea what fits what, everything HAS to come in and be 'looked at' to see what fits"

so i got a FRPP Alum manual DS, and ordered a AODE/4r70w Yoke (ford PN 1R3Z4841EA)

and that should allow me to put my manual Alum DS into my automatic tranny.

so, with all that said,

Of course they will tell you to bring it in, everything they do is custom. Also you might want to check the fit of your new shaft before getting rid of the old one, because I did a change like that in a foxbody and it fit, but there wasn't enough clearance in the tailshaft and it messed up a bushing, seal, and some other things. Joint and Clutch does good work but unless you are going over 500 plus horsepower, a stocker will probably serve your purpose. They did the custom shaft in my other car, and it was made from DOM (drawn on a mandrel) tubing, and it was about $650.00 for everything yokes and all..

it is for my mustang and it should make around 400 to 425 rwhp. sounds like a factory one will be fine if i am understanding everyone am i right?. oh i won't be running slicks and it is a street car, i would imagine that make a big difference.

The stock steel one will be fine.

I ran the stock drive-shaft in my 95 cobra and never had a problem.

Factory steel ones seem to hold up pretty well to most anything. It's the aluminum ones to watch out for when you get past 500hp.

How much should you expect to pay for shortening or lengthening a driveshaft? I have to get that done for th400 swap

i had to have one made using my stock rear yoke and it cost me 150. to shorten they just cut and re weld to lenghen they have to replace the tube so it will be a little more and it depends on what you do with the car they sometimes make it according

Please get a new one, getting a stock one re-made isnt that strong. If you break a driveshaft it can be expensive. My first one cost about $3k and the second cost me about $2k in repairs. Just spend the $400 at joint and clutch for a dom driveshaft and be done.

You may not be able to find a driveshaft shop to just simply add some length to your existing tube for liability reasons. They can always cut what is there, but adding length usually requires buying a new tube.

You have seen first hand what broken driveshafts do to transmissions, you had to fix all mine, lol.
