Having to shim that much gap lets the pilot diameter on the front of the converter out of the back of the crankshaft pilot hole. The converter bolts don't and never were intended to precisely center the torque converter to the crankshaft. That's the job of the pilot diameter on the front of the converter to ride inside the female pilot hole in the back of the crankshaft. If the converter isn't shimmed at all with that much gap, the drive lugs of the front pump rotor have little to no engagement. Both situations are hell on a front pump.

yeah it had probably a 1/4" to almost 1/2" gap, precision industries said they would go through the converter and make sure its ok for $270, dont know what the deal is it worked perfect in my 98, but if you could set me up with a saturday or sunday in febuary to bring the trans to you and let you work your magic that would be great, im in ridgeland sc. probalbly an 1 1/2hrs to 2hrs from summerville, thanks

With the converter pushed back into the trans, there should be about 1/16" to 1/8" gap clearance. It's hard to say without looking at it why it keeps breaking pumps. As far as the truck trans goes, we would have to drive it with my scanner hooked up to see what is really happening. When you have the epc unplugged, the trans goes to max line pressure. As far as slipping going into 3rd, that is indicative of your 3/4 clutches being toast. We should be able to use the Vigilante converter, but depending on the debris we find in the pan, we might have to send it out to get cut open and checked out.

is there any difference in 98 camaro 4l60e, and one 99-02, the one out of the car now is 98 took it out a my car that i crashed has transgo kit in it already, but when i installed it with the vigilanty converter also from the 98 in my 2000 m6 car it broke the pump, i had the pump replaced put it back in and withng 10 miles it broke, i replaced the pump and shimmed the converter(no shims in the 98) with washers but now the transmission wont shift into third slips like neutral, in the car now is a 2003 truck 4l60e slips unless i have the epc unplugged, i really like the vigilanty converter and it would save me $750 to use it instead of getting the yank any suggestions would be great on how to fix the pump breaking issue, and which would you rather build the one with the transgo or the stock truck one, thanks again

Bench labor runs $450. Any cost in addition to that is just parts. Figure on about $500 to $600 in parts just to be on the safe side. That parts price includes the Transgo shift kit, vette servo, double cage forward sprag, input shell sleeve, beast shell, band, 7 plate 3-4 clutch, and other upgraded small parts.
