1989 s15 wont crank......

some of you know some of you don't well i bought hal's truck. it aint the fastest thing in the world but i do love the way it looks. it will be fast before long. trust me. well heres the dilemma i have. he never cranked the motor before i got it for more than a mintue. well now it will crank on its own about 3 times but it turns over slow and then after about the third time it doesent crank any more. but when it does crank it sounds damn good. we basically have it narrowed down to 2 things. the battery or starter. any input or things to try? if no one has n e thing to add ill just try those.

p.s who put the thermostat in this bad boy? haha

o yeah it has 13 volts at battery and after i went to crank it up the fourth time and it wouldnt it was at 12.7. ima load test it tomorrow.

LXtasy 04-20-2009 07:51 PM

Check the ground maybe that is it. Which is under the bed near the passenger side rear tire.

ALSO battery is in the bed FYI. You haven't load tested the battery yet? Like I said yesterday the battery has been sitting for awhile and probably could be dead as the truck just sat most of the time.

BigdaddyDupree 04-20-2009 08:00 PM

yeah it had 13 volts when i checked it out today then after a few cranks it only had 12.7 but i have it in the back seat of my car and i am load testing it tomorrow. i cranked it up today and it sounded damn good. got a nice lil chop to it. if it isnt the battery then how old is the starter? ima have to check that next. you dont reckon the motor could be too tight do ya?

BAD BOB 04-20-2009 08:13 PM

most the time 12.7 will be good. its when you get closer to 11 then you got a problem. I would check and make sure you got good grounds and then see what she doo. If that dont help just put a manual trans in it and just push start it!!!!!!:hysterical:

Everything checked out good with the motor. It has less than 2500 miles on it.

Starter's age is undetermined at this time.

Check the ground for the battery and lmk.

that was a sad day when i found out it was sold.

BigdaddyDupree 04-20-2009 09:15 PM

yeah man i really like the truck were going thursday and putting the seats on it and moving it to suit me. haha. i will check the ground tomorrow but i think it is a starter solenoid problem. once it gets hot it wont start at all. and barely turn over. ill give you a call tomorrow evening hal and let you know what i find

98Camarod 04-20-2009 09:15 PM

Your saying crank and I'm thinking the motor turning over. But you said when it does crank it sounds good.

As for the slow cranking, could need a high torque starter depending on the compression or the batter doesn't have enough cranking amps or combination of the two.

Had that problem on my big block Chevelle. The header was too close to the starter solenoid. I ended up getting a small high torque starter and all was good.

BigdaddyDupree 04-20-2009 09:20 PM

it will turn over just so slow til there is not way to start. when you first crank it it does fine. ima pull the starter tomorrow and have it checked out. hal do you know the compression of this motor?

98Camarod 04-20-2009 09:28 PM

is there a lot of heat generated near the starter solenoid?

BigdaddyDupree 04-20-2009 09:30 PM

yeah pretty much its a s-10 with shorty headers and it is close

I'd say you found the problem. Are you able to wrap the exhaust there or atleast put a heat shield around the starter? I know advance sells the heat shield over in the "performance" section

BigdaddyDupree 04-20-2009 09:41 PM

should i still check my started to see if it is good? it might have already hurt the solenoid

79bluebird 04-20-2009 09:42 PM

i wrapped my starter when i put the new mini starter on my s10 with a 355. and i am useing sanderson shortie headers.

:offtopic: but it looks like you are building a nice yard full of trucks, congrats on the purchase. Hal, I'm sorry you had to sell it, but when he gets all the kinks worked out you will be able to see it go down the track:cheers

BigdaddyDupree 04-21-2009 07:23 AM

yea im about to liquidate sum vehicles. ima get the 98 s-10 together and sell it and i think ima sell my k-5

LXtasy 04-21-2009 07:43 AM

Tyler. I am not sure if the ground strap that is on the back of the motor on the passenger side coming off the transmission is hooked up. Check that as well, I woke up this morning and thought of that.

Unsure of the compression of the motor. I know those heads lower the compression so I am unsure of that one. I do not know how to determine that one.

BigdaddyDupree 04-21-2009 08:25 AM

aite hal ill check that when i get home this evening and let u know.

WWhittle 04-21-2009 09:57 AM

If its slow to crank, have you checked the basics yet? Timing and carb adjustments?
