Default 4.0 sohc explorer engine

truck belongs to girl i work with. her boyfriend tried changing timing chain and tensioner. he put it back together. wont start or run.

they asked my advise, i asked if they have valve timing correct. i dont think they do. went and looked at this mess today and i would like to know how you figure out where valve timing is in relation to the crank. there is a shaft that runs thru the engine and somehow, if you take the bolt out of the cam sprocket(not really cam sproket but shaft sprocket i guess) it will free wheel.

i figure your supposed to set the engine on TDC before you start this job and everything turns out fine but if that didnt happen, then what?

guess i can spin the valve gear till both valves are closed on the 1 cylinder but is there a more precise way of getting valve timing correct?

does it even sound like i sorta know what i'm trying to ask here?
