Attaching A Rearview Mirror

Driving along one day and the passenger's side rear view mirror (just the breakable glass part, not the housing) just dropped off exploding into tiny bits. The truck is a 93 so I guess this is normal, the glue just let go apparently.

I ordered a NAPA replacement off eBay and much to my shock and amazement, it actually fits.

There is two sided sticky tape included but there are only three attachment points (about the size of a postage stamp) on the housing so...I'm wondering what's the best thing to use. Of course there are all kinds of glue, Gorilla snot, Super Jiz and of course the magical JB Weld line of products.

I'd like something that hopefully will hold a while as it's getting embarrasing cutting off Smart Cars, Neons and the like when I come back right from the hammer lane. They fill the blind spot nicely and so far I've been lucky, each one has had good brakes.

Ideas? ("Stop Driving" is not an acceptable response thank you)

PS The instructions I happened to read say you can run a bead of clear silicone around the edge of the mirror but if you know me, you know that's probably not a good idea..if appearance counts for anything at least.

Good point, I didn't realize it but the mirror is not totally opaque.

I used the tape on mine when I replaced it. Seems to work fine and you cant see it.

Using sillycone, just pressing it in place and SNAP!

I guess a new broken mirror is better than no mirror at all.

Not a big deal really, all I need to be able to see is if there's something in the blind spot. It will work.

There should be a "pad" for the mirror to sit on, that snaps into those three spots you see. It probably came off with the mirror glass.

when you order the replacement it only comes with the glass itself, and the sticky tape to secure it to the "pad." If that is missing, you're wasting your time. you need the backing plate "pad" thingamajigger.

Did auto glass for 6 years and had to turn away MANY people that were missing this piece.

Most insurance companies will pay to have glass companies fix the side mirrors for free similar to what they do with windshields.

Yeah I guess the pad went with the glass but then the pad must have been attached to certain points as the little double sided tape squares were still there.

And Joe, yeah I though about replacing the entire thing housing and all but I thought I might be able to just replace the glass...

Well, I ran a bead of silicone around the outside so it should hold for a while at least. And as I've said, the main reason I need it is to be sure there's not a compact car or something tucked away in the blind spot when I change lanes to the right. The truck has a shell over the bed which makes it hard to see. Without this it wouldn't be hard to just turn around and look.

When I get some dough coming in I'll probably try and get something else for a DD. I have a Trans Am but these days a fuel injected V8 doesn't make for an economical ride.

If its broke in say 3 pieces, its liable to show you 3 cars over there now. Heh.
