The closer ratios of the 4L80E do seem to be better for road racing than the original 4L65E ratios. With the T56, you do get one extra gear below the 1.00 direct ratio, plus 1 extra OD gear.

One thing to keep in mind with high HP T56 applications is that the factory Dexron fluid can't handle high torque loads. Synchromesh is a little heavier but not too thick as to cause problems shifting when cold.
